NNF 003/2002 - IMPORTANT NOTICE - Motor Vehicle Imports

The Commonwealth Department of Transport and Regional Services has advised that:

• an import approval cannot be granted under Section 19 of the Act or under the regulations made pursuant to Section 20 where the vehicle(s) has been imported without an import approval.

The Motor Vehicle Standards Act (MVSA) 1989 and the Regulations do not allow the Administrator of Vehicle Standards to issue an import approval where a vehicle has already been imported into Australia.

It should be noted that importation occurs once the vehicle is landed or brought within a port for the purposes of landing it. Under Section 18 of the MVSA, it is an offence to import, without an import approval, a nonstandard vehicle or a vehicle that does not have an identification plate.

Members are strongly advised not to ship vehicle(s) to Australia until such time as they are issued with an Import Approval.

Important Notice

If the supplier / shipper uses wooden packing in a shipment, they must also supply an acceptable treatment certificate.

If no acceptable treatment certificate is provided, the shipment will be subject to quarantine inspection, and the wooden packing used will then be subject to treatment or destruction at the importers expense.

This will add considerable time and cost to LCL shipments.
