Vehicles imported before an import approval
is given
The Commonwealth Department of Transport
and Regional Services has advised that:
The Motor Vehicle Standards Act (MVSA)
1989 and the Regulations do not allow the Administrator of
Vehicle Standards to issue an import approval where a vehicle has
already been imported into Australia.
It should be noted that importation
occurs once the vehicle is landed or brought within a port for the
purposes of landing it. Under Section 18 of the MVSA, it is an offence
to import, without an import approval, a nonstandard vehicle or a
vehicle that does not have an identification plate.
Members are strongly advised not to ship
vehicle(s) to Australia until such time as they are issued with an
Import Approval.
